SUMMARY:Tide’s Out Aquaculture Workforce Development
DESCRIPTION:Shellfish aquaculture is central to rural coastal communities\, but many companies have struggled in recent years to recruit and retain a steady workforce to sustain the industry. In response\, Washington Sea Grant created Tide’s Out\, a FREE two-part training program for the next generation of the aquaculture industry workforce. \nThe Crew Training Course is designed to teach youth and young adults the technical and soft skills for success in aquaculture and other careers related to the maritime industry or marine resource management. \nThe Crew Training will take place July 27-31\, 2026 in South Bend and is open to anyone age 18+ looking to learn more about working in the shellfish industry. Resources to support Spanish speakers are available. \n\nYour kids\, kids of employees in your organization\, or youth from your community interested in an introduction to shellfish aquaculture.\nRecent graduates looking for exposure to the shellfish aquaculture industry.\nEmployees or interns at your own organization who might benefit from a broad introductory exposure to the different elements of the shellfish aquaculture industry.Job seekers or folks looking to change up and grow their career.\n*Please note participants must be 18 years old by July 27th\, 2026. Lunch and snacks will be provided daily.\n\nWe’re excited to share a fun\, hands‑on agenda for our free 5‑day course at the WSG South Bend location. Participants will visit outstanding local partners\, meet industry guests\, and dive into both traditional and modern aquaculture operations. Throughout the week\, we’ll tour shellfish farms\, a hatchery‑nursery setup\, a working processing facility\, learn about Willapa Bay from experts and locals\, and tour a boat yard— maybe we’ll even get a little wet and muddy. Each day includes conversations with the people who grow and sell some of the nation’s finest seafood\, with opportunities to ask questions about their work and career paths. On the final day\, participants will create their own communication piece showcasing the diversity of our high‑quality local shellfish… warning there may be slurping and delicious food. \nPlease contact Stuart Thomas (sthoma25@uw.edu\, or 206.543.8066) for more information.
